DESCRIPTION; CHARSET=UTF-8 :The session is a workshop designed to help PhD researchers develop their skills in critical writing.

It will be a collaborative, interactive and stimulating session where researchers are expected to reflect not only on their own practice but also to be able to engage critically with examples of PhD writing to improve their understanding of what it means to be a critical thinker.

The workshop will focus on 2 key areas of a PhD thesis – 

1	the Literature Review 

where engaging with the literature critically is really important not only for the development of the PhD study as a whole but also for the development of the overarching argument that acts as the framework for the whole thesis. 

2	The Discussion chapter 

where the arguments which were revealed in the literature review which underpin the PhD study are examined critically against the study’s own findings and analysis. 

The more critical the analysis of the literature review is the better the argument becomes and the easier it is to discuss the study’s findings against the literature in the discussion chapter – hence the need for critical engagement to improve the written outcome.

Bio
Dr Dani Hilliard is passionate about helping students learn to communicate effectively. She has been teaching for 25 years and, having degrees in Medieaval History, International Relations, Psychology and Education across a range of subject disciplines. Her PhD examined the problems students have writing essays, dissertations and theses. She created a programme to enable students to become more critical, reflective and independent in their thinking to improve their written communication.
